With a tiara mounted on her head, gauntlets secured on her arms, a sword in her holster, and a smile on her face, Diana of Themyscira, better known as Wonder Woman, is one of the world’s best-known superheroes. Wonder Woman has been an icon of pop culture since her creation; however, in recent years, her popularity has skyrocketed. With Gal Gadot now portraying the show-stopping heroine, I can’t help but notice how much Wonder Woman reminds me of the B’nai B’rith Girls.

In every comic book, TV show, movie, and video game, Wonder Woman has shown that she possesses many characteristics of an exemplary BBG. Just like B’nai B’rith Girls, Wonder Woman was very close to her sisters. Wonder Woman grew up on Paradise Island, an island secluded to only women. Through war and fun, the heroine was able to make great relationships with members of her island. Similarly, in BBG chapters, we are able to make powerful bonds with our sisters through exciting programs, as well as the teamwork and cooperation that BBYO teaches. Wonder Woman may be a ruthless warrior, but deep down, she has a heart of gold. Through her prevalent passion for community service, she shows kindness and love to everyone around her. Within BBG, the community service and social action we participate in mirrors the kindness of the powerful heroine. From soup kitchens to care packages, BBGs around the globe embody kindness and embrace the desire to give back. Just
like Wonder Woman, B’nai B’rith Girls use their voices to stand up and fight for what they believe in. BBGs never step back or give up when they believe in something; they endure and keep going, no matter how harsh the conditions may be. We are mighty, persistent, and determined; just like Wonder Woman, we are all heroines.

The multiple depictions of Wonder Woman truly embody traits and qualities of a BBG. Her kindness, persistence, and pride further show how much of a role model she is. Personally, I really look up to Wonder Woman. She pushes me not only to be a better version of myself, but also a better BBG. The next time you watch the movie Wonder Woman or read a comic book with her in it, pay attention to her actions, intentions, and ideals. B’nai B’rith Girls, I hope you will be able to notice the characteristics she encompasses, and soon you will be able to discover the true Wonder Woman within yourself.

Heather Saxe is a BBG from Mountain Region who enjoys drawing and reading comic books.
